Education in Athens
During the younger years of school boys were taught calisthenics and ball games but in the older years they were taught more war like activities like boxing, running and wrestling. All Athenian boys were expected to read heavily, however as reading and writing was a very important part of Athenian lives. The poems the Iliad and Odyssey were mandatory teaching in all primary schools. Boys were also taught how to play the Lyre, sing and maths. The Athenian education system was designed to create capable citizens who are able to do what the society needs them to be able to do.
At age 14 poorer boys dropped out of school to start apprenticeships in family trades or stores. Boys that came from richer families stayed in school until the age of 18, all athenian boys were required to attend military school and when they had graduated from there they were able to live their lives out as they wanted.
