Schooling
In ancient sparta boys left their homes at the age of seven and entered the public schooling system. The goal of this system was to end up with a well drilled military machine who would respond to order and do what they were told. The boys were made to live in communal spaces and were made to undergo a curriculum that was often painful.
Boys played ball games, learnt to ride a horse and learnt how to swim. They had to go through beatings or getting whipped if they did something to disrespect themselves. They slept on beds of reeds which they picked from the sides of rivers with their bare hands because knifes were not allowed. In winter they added feathers and down to the reeds because they thought it gave them more heat. Spartans studied a type of gymnastics/dancing to be able to do war dances and it made them more fit.
