Women
Spartan women could not become citizens, vote or hold public office but the could own land and represent themselves in court. There is evidence shown that spartan women owned about a third of the land and wealth because their husbands or fathers had died during battle. Like boys they were taught to be brave and be outspoken. Women in sparta wore plain clothes cut their hair short and did not wear make-up or perfume. They exercised and danced naked and their role was to give birth to healthy children and to be strong for their partners.
Physical training
Female spartan babies were significantly more nourished then other greek children and in some cases male babies as well. Many believe that the preference to female babies was because they needed physically strong women to be able to have healthy babies throughout her life. In their younger years females ran alongside the males and competed in gymnastics, foot and horse races, wrestling and other required physical tests. Women were known to participate in spartan festivals and also in some cases were aloud to participate in olympic sports but mainly the races.
